Clark Walters, Jr Assistants: Sensei Mike Goodson; Sempi Paul "Bud" Chappell; Sempi Tracy Holemeyer Location: Blackhawk Martial Arts Center Telephone: 757-548-9550 Time: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 7:15-9:00p.m. / Wed. 1:30-3:15p.m. / Sat 9:00-10:45a.m. Requirements: Blackhawk Traditional Martial Arts Uniform Textbook: TAO OF THE HAWK (recommended but not required) PED 129 SELF-DEFENSE (2 CR) Sections: D019, N029, N039, N049, W059 Teaches basic self-awareness skills as well as techniques that specialize in certain target areas and pressure points. This class is designed for both men and women, with a simplistic approach on modern methods of self-defense. Lectures and labs are combined to total 2 credit hours a week. Students will learn a basic easy approach to self-defense in this course. Introduction - will instill easy to understand prevention awareness. Students will learn basic kicking and hand striking techniques as well as target areas. Students will learn simple maneuvers to escape from restraints. Mid-Term - students will be graded on amount of participation and the understanding of techniques. The second half of the semester will consist of a review of previous techniques. Students will learn more advanced kicking and hand striking techniques. Students will learn valuable focusing techniques and develop explosive power. Final Exam - will be similar to the midterm, and will be comprehensive with an emphasis on recent material. Students will be eligible for a belt promotion at the end of the semester. Upon completion, the students will have a heightened sense of awareness and will possess the necessary skills needed to defend themselves against even the most skilled attackers. The skills they are going to learn will allow them time to escape a trying situation and find help. Make up classes will be made available Monday - Friday from 5:30 until 7:30 as well as all regularly scheduled TCC class times. In this course students will be graded on attendance and participation.
